“That Is When I Began to Follow Jesus”

“For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.” 1 Peter 1:23
“One day I walked up on a medical camp in my neighborhood,” M* began. “A man handed out medicine and checked for illness. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a person reach under a blue tablecloth, pull out a Bible, and secretly hand it to my neighbor. I watched for an hour; he kept doing it—giving more Bibles away. Finally, I walked over. I kicked the table.“All the Bibles scattered on the ground!” he continued. “Suddenly everyone knew what they were doing. There was an uproar, and the medical camp ended. Yet in the commotion, one of the leaders pulled me aside, spoke gently to me, and handed me a Bible. I don’t know why I took it.
“Later, I read it in my room. The Old Testament was like what we were taught. But when I came to ‘Jesus is the Son of God,’ I threw that thing down! Of course, this business of Jesus as the Son of God is the dangerous stuff my teachers had warned me of!
“Some days later, I picked it up again. I saw Jesus say, ‘Come to me, all who are heavy laden, and I will give you rest,’ and ‘Behold, I am with you always. Even to the end of the age.’”
M* stood smiling, “And that is when I began to follow Jesus. I began to preach. I met that medical man, and we became best friends. He mentored me. One day he was shot—and so I became the new mentor.”
