On many days, it is easy for me to forget that most of Florida is a swamp. Some days it is impossible to ignore.

Last night I returned to Orlando after a week of travel. I had heard that it had rained quite a bit while I was away but had a clearer picture of this when I passed several cows grazing in a field with water up to their knees! It makes you wonder how anyone lived here 100 years ago.

Most times when I talk about Papua New Guinea (PNG), I describe the steep mountains. It is a volcanic island with a spectacular mountain chain forming the central highlands.

I frequently mention that they get over 400 inches of annual rainfall, making it impossible to maintain mountain roads. I seldom mention the vast and trackless swamps created by this runoff to the north and south of these mountains.

The Sepik River, in the northwestern part of the country, is the longest river in PNG. It is the third largest river in the world by volume of water. This river system is among the largest uncontaminated freshwater wetlands in the Asia-Pacific region.

And there are 100 isolated language groups in the Sepik region still without one verse of Scripture.

Overcoming the obstacles to translation in this region is challenging, but essential to getting God’s Word to these people. Right now we are recruiting for three key positions to serve both existing translations as well as enabling new translation starts in the Sepik.

Aviation Flight Coordinator — This person is responsible for prioritizing, scheduling, and coordinating flight activity in and out of the largest center for Bible translation in the world.

Regional Center Manager — This person will be responsible for the management and oversight of a regional center. This will include scheduling and caring for the maintenance, repair, construction as needed, and management of national staff at a regional location. These centers are tasked with providing operational services for the language and translation teams working within the area.

WA Volunteer Center Manager — Historically WA has sent more volunteers to PNG than anywhere else in the world. Our volunteer center sleeps and feeds 24 volunteers, as well as provides longer term housing for other volunteers in two small apartments.

Each of these positions requires unique skills. If you or someone you know would like to learn more about these service opportunities, just reply to this email or call Erika Klingenberger at 1-800-THE WORD (800-843-9673). Erika can give you the details and connect you with Wycliffe Associates team members already living and working in PNG.

Come and be a part of getting God’s Word to 100 more language communities in Papua New Guinea!
