Speeding God's Word to South Sudan
Bruce Smith
Tears overflowed from reddened eyes onto his ebony cheeks, but his eyes never blinked as he looked into mine. “For my people the war has not ended. We are caught in the boundary dispute between the north and south. My friends, neighbors, and family members are being killed every day.”
His burden for his people is heavy. They need peace, both now and for eternity—and you can help!
Last month, I had the opportunity to meet together with leaders in Bible translation from 65 countries. Many of them I have close personal friendships with that have grown through the years of partnership to advance Bible translation in their nations. Others are relationships that are just beginning to develop as our ministry paths intersect. One of these is a leader from Sudan who had been active in Bible translation for more than 20 years. Even after the separation of South Sudan from the north last year, he continues to work in Khartoum to advocate religious freedom and peace despite fierce opposition.
In Juba, the growing capital of South Sudan, Sudanese Christians are anxious to put their newfound religious freedom to immediate use to speed God’s Word to 54 languages in their new nation. As international resources are pouring into South Sudan to support the needs of the people and their fledgling democracy, we have the opportunity to develop the only Bible translation training center in this nation. This center will provide training and support for South Sudanese Christians committed to speeding God’s Word to their own people.
The property is ready. The plans are drawn. Funding is available. Our support team is on site. The timing is right. What we need now is a construction supervisor. We are in conversation with a couple, Blake and Lindsey Berry, who are qualified and willing to go but need financial support. Our prayer is to begin construction this August. In order to do that, we need one of two things to happen: 1) we need partners to share in supporting this couple or 2) we need someone who can help us get the project started while this couple continues to develop financial support.
Although everything Wycliffe Associates does depends on financial contributions, I don’t normally highlight financial needs in eOpportunities. I hope you can see that the priority and urgency of this opportunity is unique.
If you or someone you know has construction supervision experience and would like to know more about this service opportunity, just reply to this email or call Tim Coleman toll-free at 1-800-THE WORD (800-843-9673).
If this is not your skill set, would you let me introduce you to Blake and Lindsey and invite you to consider sharing in enabling them to serve? Click here to learn more about partnering with the Berrys today.
Either way, please pray with me that God will enable this vision—to partner with Sudanese Christians to get God’s Word to their people—to become a reality soon instead of later.
